In this project, the research team proposes to leverage DNS to study a temporally-evolving nonequilibrium 3DTBL in a plane channel with an imposition of sudden transverse pressure gradient. It has been shown that this simple configuration contains the contra-intuitive effects in 3DTBL in contrast to 2DTBL.

To the author’s knowledge, the highest friction Reynolds number achieved so far is Re\tau\approx1000. We aim at pushing DNS of the flow to a significantly higher Reynolds number than attained so far. Using a solver to be described in the forthcoming sections, the team aim at simulating the flow at Re\tau=8020, which is well beyond the state-of-the-art.

Important theoretical and practical inferences are expected from this fundamental study. The obtained conclusions and data are crucial to the development of RANS models and wall models of LES.
