What are Quantum Technologies?

Quantum technologies exploit fundamental properties of quantum physics – such as superposition and entanglement – to process information, transmit data and measure physical quantities in new ways:
- Quantum computing uses quantum bits (qubits) that can be in several states at once. This opens up new approaches to hard optimisation, simulation and machine-learning problems that are difficult for classical computers.
- Quantum communication uses individual photons and quantum key distribution (QKD) to build ultra-secure communication networks. In Europe this is being developed through the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI).
- Quantum sensing & metrology use carefully controlled quantum systems as highly sensitive sensors and clocks, enabling measurements of time, gravity, magnetic fields and other quantities with unprecedented precision.
Quantum at EuroHPC
EuroHPC will deploy and operate a portfolio of European quantum computers integrated into EuroHPC supercomputers, and will support research and innovation in quantum communication, sensing and enabling technologies. These activities are coordinated with the EU’s Quantum Technologies Flagship and other initiatives, helping to translate research results, skills and industrial capabilities into concrete infrastructure and services for users in Europe.
