The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)

EuroHPC Federation Platform

EuroHPC JU aims to develop, deploy, maintain and extend across Europe, a world-leading federated and secure supercomputing, AI and quantum computing service, connected to European data ecosystems, federated data spaces, data lakes and data labs.

The EuroHPC Federation Platform (EFP) implements this vision by building and leveraging a federated homogeneous environment that will serve the diverse computational and data analysis capabilities, advanced software environments, and high-performance storage solutions available across the EuroHPC JU Hosting Entities (HEs). The platform is designed to support an expanding range of AI workflows and enable innovative approaches to complex industrial and scientific challenges. By federating these resources, the EFP ensures that the distinctive advantages of each infrastructure is fully leveraged, including energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, adherence to high security standards, strong ties with private sector, scientific communities, and active stakeholder engagement.

Key Features

One login for all systems

Users can access multiple EuroHPC systems using a single login, often provided by their home institution or national identity system. This removes the need for multiple accounts and simplifies access, including for industry users.

Easy overview of resources

Users can view and manage their computing access in one place. This includes seeing how much computing time they have, managing project members, and monitoring usage across different systems.

Simple web-based access

Users can work through an interactive web interface instead of complex technical tools. This includes features such as remote desktops, file browsing, launching jobs, and monitoring AI training or other computing tasks.

Shared software environments

The platform provides access to a common catalogue of software that is already available across systems. This makes it easier to find and use the tools needed for research and innovation without repeated installations.

Smooth data movement and workflows

Users can move data and run workflows across different systems more easily. The platform supports coordinated workflows and provides intuitive tools to create, manage and monitor them.

Secure direct access

For users who need it, secure direct access is available using short-lived digital keys, combined with additional security checks. This ensures high security while keeping access straightforward.

Smart resource scheduler

To avoid long waiting queues for accessing the EuroHPC system, the users will be assisted by the smart scheduler that will automatically choose the available or less overloaded systems in the federated network of available systems. Another attribute of this component is the possibility of selection of multiple HPC systems with heterogeneous resources for complex workflow execution. Especially for industrial use it will be able the switch between traditional HPC systems and cloud solutions (and even quantum systems) within one complex workflow.

Overall Benefits

This platform makes it easier for users to:

  • access supercomputing resources across Europe
  • work with data and software hosted in different countries
  • collaborate across borders on research and innovation

Rather than changing how each supercomputer operates, the platform builds on what already exists and connects the systems in a smarter way. This means Europe can benefit from the unique strengths of each hosting country, such as energy-efficient infrastructures, high security standards, strong links with research communities, and close cooperation with industry.

By federating resources, this platform ensures that the unique advantages of each system are utilised to their best capacity. The EuroHPC Federation Platform supports innovation, collaboration and the efficient use of Europe’s digital infrastructure.
